I just watched this Google Tech Talk video, Putting the Fun in Functional: Applying Game Mechanics to Functional Software. Anyone in the social media industry would probably benefit from watching this video, because it brings up some great points.

I'm a software developer who works on AOL Instant Messenger products. I'm very passionate about trying to do "the right thing" in AOL's products, and hope that some of that sees the light of day. Currently I work on AIM Express with a kickass team of developers, and it has been a labor of love and an outlet for us to experiment with a faster, better, more useful experience.
